Frequently Asked Questions

For Applicants...

What are the qualifications for summer employment?

Applicants must:
  • Be between the ages of 14 to 21.
  • Be residents of the City of Chicago.
  • Apply using the standard Sumnmer Jobs application.
  • Provide parental/guardian signature if the applicant is under the age of 18 at the time of application.
  • Undergo a prescreening and interview process for selection.

What kind of summer jobs and internships are provided?

The strength of Summer Jobs is the diversity of opportunity. From painting murals in public spaces to fixing computers, young people participate in a variety of programs:
  • Public agencies, such as the Chicago Public Schools, the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services, offer summer employment in the public sector and at local community based organizations.
  • The Corporate Initiative provides summer jobs in private businesses located across the City. All corporate initiative youth participants will attend a job readiness training event.
  • For 14 and 15 year olds, workforce-training programs offer pre-internships where young people are educated in appropriate workplace behavior. Participants receive a stipend for completing pre-internships.

How will I know I've been selected for summer employment?

If you have been selected, you will be notified by early June.

How are applicants selected for employment?

Applicants who are selected to interview for a position are chosen based on their qualifications and on how well their applications match the stated needs of employers. The purpose of the program is to provide the best possible match between applicants and employers.

What can I do if I am not selected?

For those who are not chosen for a position, we offer other resources. By clicking on the option, Job Resources you can learn more about finding employment, volunteer opportunities and state law.

Why wasn't I selected?

Unfortunately, there are typically fewer positions than applicants, and we are unable to provide everyone with a guarantee of employment. Try again next year.

What happens once I am selected?

Once applicants are selected they will receive a call from an Account Executive who will inform them of the next steps. In most cases, an in-person interview is required. Applicants will complete an employer's normal hiring process.

What kind of support will I receive?

Applicants can revisit the web site and check on the status of their applications.

Those applicants who are matched with a private business must complete a one-day Job Readiness and Training Session sponsored by the Chicago Department of Children and Youth Services.

A trained Account Executive, who is responsible for matching the applicant to their positions, will continue to work with the young employee as a liaison to the employer.
