  Frequently Asked Questions

Applicants CAN between the ages of 14 to 21 For Corporations...

How can a private business participate?

Complete the enclosed Corporate Initiative pledge form. (link) If you cannot hire an intern, we accept financial contributions and /or referrals to other companies we may contact to participate.

What kinds of kids are hired as interns?

Applicants will range in age from 16 to 21. They will be pre-screened to ensure their skills match your company's needs. Some will have office knowledge while others may be entering their first work experience. They will need guidance form professional staff. All will receive job readiness training.

Can we interview our potential interns?

Yes. Initially a panel of trained CYS Account Executives will pre-screen the applicants to ensure the most promising ones are referred to you. We will send you more than one applicant to interview and the final hiring decision is yours to make.

How are young people screened for this program?

Your pledge sheet will help us understand your specific needs. Then an Account Executive will search through the pool of applicants for those who meet your criteria. After you have interviewed and accepted your candidates, we will provide them with job readiness training and on-going mentoring provided by Rotary Clubs of Chicago during the summer program.

What is expected of Corporate Initiative companies?

We ask you to assign someone to conduct an orientation for your interns on their first day and to provide a contact person to supervise and provide on-going guidance to the intern. Please do not hesitate to rely on the CYS Account Executive to support your efforts. At the end of the summer, you will have an opportunity to evaluate your interns and provide the City with feedback on the overall program.

How much do we need to pay our interns?

Each company should determine their own level of compensation based on the job duties. However, all interns must receive at least minimum wage. It costs less than $2,100 to sponsor a full-time eight-week internship at minimum wage.

When does the program start and end?

We suggest employing interns for eight weeks. Starting approximately on June 27 to August 12. However, we encourage you to work out the best possible schedule with your interns. In some cases, interns have forged relationships that last into the school year, and well beyond the reaches of our program.

We normally drug screen our employees for drugs. Do we have to screen the interns?

Each company will make the decision for itself. We emphasize that the young people will be mostly in high school or recently out of school. Unless there is a reason for drug testing related to the job duties, we would prefer not screening the youth for drugs. As part of job readiness training, we will discuss issues related to drug usage with all youth.

Who can we contact if we have questions or problems?

Each participating company will be assigned a CYS Account Executive who will be available by phone and email to address with any issues or question that may arise. Call 312-743-0300 to contact an Account Executive.

What if we can't take on any intern this summer, but we'd like to support the program?

You can help by making a cash donation to support internships for community-based organizations. Many of the city's smaller organizations, particularly neighborhood non-profits, may not have the resources to take on interns, but they also have meaningful work that interns could do. Any financial contribution is appreciated. However, we recommend a pledge of $2,100 per internship.
